About this BMI Calculator
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a globally used screening indicator for healthy weight, with a simple formula: weight divided by height squared. But Chinese body types differ markedly from Western ones, so China's national health standard uses stricter adult cutoffs: 18.5–23.9 is normal, 24 or above is overweight and 28 or above is obese.
This tool follows the Chinese standard: besides your BMI value and category, it also gives your ideal weight range (BMI 18.5–23.9) and tailored advice, so you know where you stand whether cutting or gaining.
How to use
- Enter height (cm) and weight (kg)
- Tap "Calculate BMI" for your index, category and advice
- Check the Chinese standard table below to find your bracket
FAQ
What BMI counts as normal?
Under the Chinese adult standard, BMI of 18.5–23.9 is normal; 24–27.9 is overweight; 28 or above is obese; below 18.5 is underweight. Western standards (18.5–24.9 normal, 30+ obese) are more lenient.
Why am I classified as overweight when I have lots of muscle?
BMI can't tell muscle from fat. Muscular people carry dense, heavy muscle so their BMI often reads high; assess yourself together with body-fat percentage and waist circumference (under 90 cm for men, 85 cm for women).
Does it work for kids and seniors?
Children and teens should be judged by age- and sex-specific growth curves, and the standard is slightly relaxed for seniors (65+). For these groups, consult a doctor rather than applying the adult standard directly.
