A thesis requires at least 8,000 characters, a blog article stays under 2,000, official documents have strict length limits — all of these need accurate counting. Mixed Chinese-English text complicates things: Chinese counts by character, English by word, and whether punctuation and digits count varies by standard.
This tool tallies 10 metrics live: characters (with/without spaces), Chinese characters, English words, digits, punctuation, lines, paragraphs, estimated reading time, and the school-standard "composition grid count" (each Chinese character and punctuation mark takes 1 cell, every 2 letters take 1).

How is mixed Chinese-English text counted?
Chinese characters are counted individually, English words as consecutive letter sequences, and digits and punctuation are tallied separately to avoid confusion. Total characters include everything (optionally excluding spaces).
What is the "composition grid count"?
It's how school composition paper counts: each Chinese character and each punctuation mark takes 1 cell, every 2 letters take 1 cell. The tool estimates by this convention for grading and layout.
How is reading time calculated?
Estimated at 400 characters/minute for Chinese and 200 words/minute for English; mixed text is computed separately and added, rounded up to whole minutes.
